Yes, it’s still winter but Spring is March 20th so there’s hope!!
Daffodils have sprouted and soon will be blooming.
If you have a Pussy Willow around cut off some branches and bring in to let them bloom early inside. To keep the blossoms longer put them in a vase with marbles and NO WATER. If you want more pussy willows (or any willows for that matter); put them in water and they will send out roots. Free new trees!! Can’t beat that.
This year I am going to try that with some arborvitae, I’ll update you on how that is going. I want a hedge but I don’t want to spend a lot of money on trees so I’m going to see what varieties root and which don’t. It’s not a big expenditure of time or energy. You can do it, too. Just go outside with some clippers and cut healthy looking branches about 8 inches long with bud development on them. Strip off the lower buds 3-4 inches and if an evergreen the needles.
This is the tricky part (but not very!) Fill your kitchen sink or the tub with warm water. Put your branches underwater and cut them at a severe angle, then immediately put your cut branches in tepid water. You can either put them in a cool place and keep an eye on them so that you can bring them out when they start to bud or you can do what I do. I arrange them in a tall vase and put them in a place where they are as warm as I am, but not direct heat, and light, but not direct sun. That way I can admire the entire process the branch goes through from stick to bloom. Be sure to change their water once a week or when it starts to get cloudy. Enjoy!
